Free Legal Clinic for Veterans – Wills and Advanced Directives
Baker Donelson, one of the region’s largest and most respected law firms, and Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida (CLSMF), Central Florida’s largest provider of free legal services to the poor, are teaming up to help veterans prepare wills and advance directives for free.
This free Veterans Wills Clinic will be held on October 30, 2013 from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at CLSMF’s Orlando office. Veterans can pre-register by calling toll free 1-866-428-0105, ext. 2906 or ext. 2913.
Veterans will be able to meet one-on-one with legal professionals to prepare wills and advanced directives. Most participants will be able to leave the clinic with fully executed documents. Participants must bring with them:
- photo identification,
- the names and addresses of two people whom the veteran would like to make medical decisions in the event that he or she is unable to do so,
- a list of how the veteran would like his or her property distributed upon their death, and
- the names of all individuals and/or groups whom the veteran would like to receive that property.
Leading health providers such as the Mayo Clinic recommend that all adults, regardless of age, have advanced directives because unexpected emergencies can happen at any time. Advanced directives speak for you when you are unable to speak for yourself due to illness. Legal experts also agree that everyone should have a will. A will allows you to take responsibility for what happens to your property after your death instead of leaving it up to the state to decide.
