On The Air at the Equal Justice Conference

In May 2018, CLSMF’s CEO, Kimberly Sanchez attended the Equal Justice Conference, a gathering of more than 1,000 social justice warriors sharing information and working together to provide access to justice for all. The event is co-hosted by the American Bar Association (ABA) Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service and the National Legal Aid and Defender Association (NLADA). While at the conference, Kimberly was invited to host “On The Road,” Legal Talk Network’s podcast which covers the latest events in the legal industry.

From the importance of pro bono legal services in times of natural disaster to developing partnerships for legal field research, a variety of topics were discussed in the nine episodes hosted by Kimberly. Jim Sandman, President of Legal Services Corporation and other panelists talked about the importance of engaging elected officials on how a law becomes a bill that later provides a gateway for access to justice. Another conversation focused on ethics in our current age of innovation. Speakers, Abhijeet Chavan, Urban Insight, Inc., Johnathan Pyle, Philadelphia Legal Assistance and Angela Trip, Michigan Legal Help discussed why it’s vital to question data and whether it is being obtained from a place free of bias.

All of these topics are significant to the legal industry in its entirety, but even more so to the evolving world of legal aid. Conversations between legal aid professionals, both current and retired, open the doorway for necessary discourse that results in change and new ideas.
